CFPB Announces Policy Shift Regarding Nonbank Registry Deadlines

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) revealed it will deprioritize enforcement and supervision actions against entities failing to meet upcoming deadlines for the regulation titled Registry of Nonbank Covered Persons Subject to Certain Agency and Court Orders. This approach will apply specifically to the April 14, 2025, registration deadline for entities governed by 12 CFR 1092.206(a)(2) and the July 14, 2025, deadline for entities under 12 CFR 1092.206(a)(3).

Rather than enforcing compliance with these registry deadlines, the CFPB stated it will focus its resources on addressing more urgent threats to consumers. The regulation, first announced in July 2024 at 89 Fed. Reg. 56028 and codified at 12 CFR part 1092, mandates nonbank entities to register certain court and agency orders.

The Bureau is also evaluating broader changes. This includes potentially issuing a notice of proposed rulemaking to rescind the regulation or limit its scope.

The CFPB’s shift signals a reallocation of priorities to align enforcement and oversight with consumer protection needs. The agency’s next steps regarding amending or repealing the regulation are expected to provide clarity on this evolving policy approach.
