WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall by Eagle Produce LLC of Scottsdale, AZ, involving 224 cases of Kandy brand whole cantaloupes. This action follows the detection of potential Salmonella contamination, a bacterium that can cause severe illness. Young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to its effects. Symptoms in healthy individuals often include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare instances, the infection can lead to serious complications such as arterial infections and endocarditis.
The affected cantaloupes, identified by UPC code 4050 and lot code 846468, were distributed between August 13th and 17th. They reached supermarkets across Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Texas, and Virginia. These cantaloupes can be recognized by a red and white sticker displaying the KANDY label. Only this specific batch is subject to recall.
The recall was triggered by routine testing by the State of Michigan, which confirmed Salmonella presence in the cantaloupes sold at retail. Although no illnesses have been reported yet, Eagle Produce LLC advises consumers to dispose of the affected products to prevent any health risks. The company is cooperating with the FDA to ensure consumer safety and address the issue promptly.
For further information or inquiries, consumers can contact Eagle Produce LLC at 1-800-627-8674, available Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM PST. Individuals concerned about potential illness should seek medical advice from their healthcare provider.
