WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently unveiled a significant investment of nearly $62 million dedicated to 20 projects aimed at advancing clean hydrogen technologies. This initiative spans 15 states and targets the enhancement of hydrogen fueling infrastructure, as well as the development and demonstration of hydrogen-powered equipment in ports.
These projects are pivotal to President Biden and Vice President Harris’ broader clean energy strategy, which seeks to reinforce America’s economic competitiveness, create high-quality jobs, and significantly reduce emissions harmful to public health and ecosystems. U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm emphasized the importance of this venture, highlighting its role in propelling the United States to the forefront of clean hydrogen development and deployment worldwide.
The projects are managed by the DOE’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office and are categorized into five primary areas. These include the creation of advanced components for hydrogen fueling in medium and heavy-duty vehicles, the development of a cost-effective and scalable hydrogen refueling station model, and the design and demonstration of hydrogen fuel cell-powered port equipment at the Port of Oakland. Furthermore, projects focused on enabling permitting and safety, as well as equitable community engagement in hydrogen technology, are also funded.
This strategic investment not only aims to improve hydrogen technologies but also ensures that the benefits of a clean energy future are distributed equitably across the nation. By addressing challenges in permitting and safety and engaging directly with disadvantaged communities, these projects align with the DOE’s broader goals of supporting Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs and commercial-scale installations.
The DOE’s commitment to these initiatives reflects a broader commitment to sustainable development and environmental justice, ensuring that the transition to a clean energy economy is inclusive and beneficial to all Americans.
