ELVERSON, PA — State Rep. Paul Friel and State Sen. Katie Muth, alongside state Transportation Secretary Mike Carroll, announced a significant reconstruction project for St. Peters Road (SR 4041) in St. Peters Village, Warwick Township, Chester County, on Thursday. The area has been plagued by erosion, causing instability and safety concerns.
The announcement was made at a press conference held at Saint Peter’s Bakery in Elverson. The officials highlighted the issues caused by years of gradual erosion on the steep slope between St. Peters Road and French Creek.
“Securing the resources to fix the portion of the road by St. Peter’s Village has been a top priority for my team,” said Friel. He added that he, Senator Muth, and PennDOT officials have been working diligently since February to finalize plans for the repair.
The project aims to stabilize the slope and reconstruct St. Peters Road in the affected area. Preliminary engineering design for the project is slated to begin sometime in 2024 and is expected to last two years. As the project site falls within the St. Peters Village Historic District, PennDOT also anticipates coordinating with Section 106 Consulting Parties.
Senator Muth emphasized the importance of the reconstruction project to local residents and small businesses, stating, “The reconstruction of St. Peters Road is so important to residents and small businesses in this region of SD44 – not only because of the danger the current road presents, but because this route of travel impacts their livelihood.”
Currently restricted to one-lane traffic since early 2020, this section of St. Peter’s Road sees an estimated daily traffic of 800 vehicles, including numerous school buses from the Owen J. Roberts School District.
Secretary Carroll expressed his department’s commitment to improving Pennsylvania’s infrastructure, stating they are eager to support and move the St. Peters Road project into its design phase.
The announcement marks a significant step in improving the safety and accessibility of St. Peters Road, a crucial artery for the residents and businesses of St. Peters Village.
PennDOT has created a website for the project which will be updated throughout the multiple phases of the project. Click here to visit the PennDOT website.
