WEST CHESTER, PA — Centinel Spine has unveiled encouraging data supporting the long-term success and market expansion of lumbar total disc replacement (LTDR). A pivotal study conducted by the Texas Back Institute reveals a remarkably low 1.26% rate of removal or revision for LTDR procedures over 20 years, underscoring the procedure’s durability and reliability.
The study tracked 2,141 patients since 2000, with an average follow-up of nearly 79 months. Among those with a follow-up of 15 years or more, only one patient required revision. Dr. Richard Guyer, a leading orthopedic spine surgeon at the Texas Back Institute, stated, “The incredibly low removal/revision rate in this data across thousands of patients far exceeded our expectations and, we believe, is significantly better than knee and hip replacement revision rates over the same period of time.”
Centinel Spine stands as the fastest-growing company in the spine industry, focusing solely on cervical and lumbar disc replacements. The LTDR sector is experiencing rapid growth, with a compound annual growth rate exceeding 25% in the U.S. over the past five years. The company has consistently outpaced the market and anticipates continued growth driven by several factors.
Long-term data, such as the recent 20-year study, continues to affirm the efficacy of LTDR. Additionally, the technology behind prodisc L has been extensively validated in over 540 published studies. As reimbursement coverage strengthens, with about 95% of U.S. payers now covering one-level LTDR, a broader acceptance for two-level procedures is expected.
Patient interest is also on the rise, with a 70% increase in searches for LTDR in 2024 compared to 2023. Steve Murray, CEO of Centinel Spine, noted, “We see ongoing growth in the lumbar total disc replacement market for years to come, with prodisc L leading the way. Increasingly, patients are sharing the life-changing impact this procedure has on their welfare and quality of life.”
Centinel Spine’s mission is to advance LTDR technology and improve patient outcomes, with a focus on expanding access and awareness of this effective surgical option.
