HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Health has introduced a new online dashboard to provide residents and healthcare providers with crucial information about tickborne diseases. This tool aims to help Pennsylvanians understand where ticks are most prevalent and take necessary precautions while enjoying outdoor activities.

The dashboard offers detailed state data on tickborne disease activity, including Lyme disease, the most commonly reported tickborne illness in Pennsylvania. Users can view case counts across the state and see the number of cases per 100,000 residents in each county. This data helps residents gauge the risk of encountering ticks in their specific areas.

“Pennsylvania has incredible outdoor recreational opportunities, and we want to provide as much information as possible for residents to enjoy them safely,” said Acting Secretary of Health Dr. Debra Bogen. “Taking appropriate precautions can help avoid Lyme and other tick-borne diseases that can lead to serious illness. As a pediatrician, I always recommend doing a tick check after playing outside, especially for children and pets.”

In 2022, Pennsylvania ranked ninth in the United States for the number of Lyme disease cases reported by population. The state reported 8,413 cases of Lyme disease, translating to an incidence rate of 64.9 cases per 100,000 persons. While tick-borne diseases can occur year-round, the majority of cases spike from April through August.

The reporting of Lyme disease in Pennsylvania has shifted. Since 2022, the state relies solely on laboratory reports rather than a combination of laboratory and clinical information from healthcare providers. This change means that Lyme disease cases are now confirmed based only on laboratory criteria, streamlining the reporting process.

Tackling Tickborne Diseases with Data-driven Health Tools

The new dashboard is a valuable resource for both individuals and healthcare professionals. It provides up-to-date information that can influence personal and public health decisions. Awareness and education about tickborne diseases are essential for preventing serious health issues. The dashboard empowers Pennsylvanians to stay informed and proactive about their health.

Understanding the prevalence of tickborne diseases can help residents take practical measures to protect themselves. Simple steps like wearing long sleeves and pants, using insect repellent, and conducting thorough tick checks after spending time outdoors can significantly reduce the risk of tick bites and subsequent illness.

The launch of this dashboard has broader implications for public health in Pennsylvania. By making data accessible and transparent, the Department of Health encourages informed decision-making and helps mitigate the spread of tickborne diseases. This initiative also highlights the importance of integrating technology into public health strategies to enhance community well-being.

In summary, the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s new online dashboard is a significant step toward combating tickborne diseases. It provides residents with the tools they need to enjoy outdoor activities safely, fosters greater awareness of the risks associated with ticks, and promotes proactive health measures. As the state continues to address this public health concern, the dashboard will be an essential resource for keeping Pennsylvania’s communities informed and healthy.
