WILMINGTON, DE — ChristianaCare, in partnership with Emerus Holdings Inc., has announced plans to open three neighborhood hospitals in southeastern Pennsylvania by 2025. The health care providers are set to develop two new facilities in Delaware County, in addition to the hospital already being developed at ChristianaCare’s West Grove Campus in southern Chester County.
These neighborhood hospitals are part of a broader vision to bring high-quality medical care closer to home for residents in these communities. The facilities will operate round the clock, providing access to emergency services and inpatient care, as well as an array of outpatient services tailored to the needs of the local communities.
“We are excited to bring this new model of care to our neighbors in Delaware County,” said Janice Nevin, M.D., MPH, ChristianaCare president and CEO. “Neighborhood hospitals will enable us to provide access to high-quality care in a way that is sustainable and right-sized to meet the needs of local communities.”
Each neighborhood hospital will feature approximately 10 inpatient beds and a full-service emergency department, equipped to handle common emergency care needs such as falls, injuries, heart attacks, and strokes. Alongside this, they will offer diagnostic capabilities, including ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), X-ray, and laboratory services.
In an innovative move, the hospitals will also have access to ChristianaCare’s extensive network of specialist services, such as neurology and cardiology, through virtual consultations.
To further enhance their community-centered approach, each location will include a health and wellness center offering an array of outpatient services. These services, developed based on community needs, could encompass primary care, outpatient diagnostics, and other specialty services.
The exact locations for the Delaware County neighborhood hospitals are yet to be finalized and will be announced at a later date. However, all three hospitals are slated for a 2025 opening, with the West Grove location anticipated to be the first to welcome patients.
Emerus Holdings Inc., ChristianaCare’s partner in this endeavor, currently operates in partnership with 42 acute-care facilities across the country. Emerus CEO Vic Schmerbeck expressed enthusiasm about the joint venture, stating, “We’re excited to help bring sustainable, compassionate, high-quality health care that will meet the needs of Pennsylvanians now and in the future.”
ChristianaCare’s commitment to providing healthcare services to southeastern Pennsylvania residents is already well established. Today, it offers primary care in three practices located in Jennersville, West Grove, and Kennett Square. In addition, the Concord Health Center in Chadds Ford provides a wide array of services, including primary care, women’s health, sports medicine, behavioral health, and more. Together, these facilities serve as the medical home for 25,000 residents in these communities.
The introduction of the neighborhood hospitals signals an innovative approach to healthcare delivery, making access to high-quality medical care more convenient for residents of southeastern Pennsylvania.
