HARRISBURG, PA — In response to the increasing number of scams plaguing innocent citizens, Pennsylvania’s House Republican Policy Committee, led by Chairman Josh Kail (R-Beaver/Washington), and Rep. Joe Hogan (Bucks) convened a hearing last week. The discussion revolved around this growing menace and potential strategies to safeguard the community.
Titled “Safeguarding our Community from Fraud,” the hearing brought together a diverse group of testifiers including Bucks County Sheriff Fred Harran, District Attorney Jennifer Schorn, PECO’s Director of Customer Care Nicolette Brown, Penn Community Bank CEO Jeane Vidoni, and the bank’s Director of Fraud and Security Management Rick Cimakasky.
Hogan, who has been vocal about prioritizing community safety, stressed the importance of consumer education in preventing fraud. He thanked law enforcement and community leaders from organizations like PECO and Penn Community Bank for their efforts in protecting consumers and holding perpetrators accountable.
The hearing coincided with National Consumer Protection Week, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about consumers’ rights and educating them on how to avoid falling victim to fraudulent activities. While no one is immune to fraud, it was noted that older populations are particularly susceptible.
Testifiers emphasized the necessity of reporting suspected scams to the police promptly and the importance of running annual credit reports to ensure all activity is accurate.
