HARRISBURG, PAState Representative Craig Williams has announced a renewed commitment to the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program with an additional $3 million included in the 2024-25 state budget. This brings the total funding for the initiative to over $10 million since its inception in 2021.

Addressing Gun Violence

Project Safe Neighborhoods, a federal initiative established by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2001, focuses on reducing violent crime by prosecuting felons found with firearms. The program has a proven track record of lowering violent crime rates by targeting individuals who pose the greatest threat to community safety.

Rep. Williams, a former Assistant United States Attorney, has firsthand experience with PSN. His initiative ensures additional local assistant district attorneys in Delaware and Philadelphia counties, known as special assistant United States Attorneys (SAUSAs), will prosecute gun crimes at the federal level. Federal sentences for illegal gun possession are more severe and offer no parole, making them a strong deterrent.

“As a former PSN prosecutor, I have seen firsthand the impact this program can have on reducing gun violence and making our communities safer,” said Williams. “This funding will enable us to continue this important program fighting violence in our region.”

The Need for Enhanced Prosecution

Philadelphia continues to grapple with a severe gun violence crisis. In 2023 alone, the city recorded 1,660 shooting victims. This stark figure highlights the urgent need for effective prosecution to curb the escalating violence.

“Gun violence remains a critical issue,” said Williams. “Our goal with PSN is to target the most dangerous offenders and remove illegal firearms from our streets. Convicted felons found in possession of guns clearly have no regard for the law. The answer is federal felony prosecution. I am grateful to my House and Senate colleagues for their continued support of this initiative.”

A Proven Approach

Williams’ extensive background as a federal and Marine Corps prosecutor, handling cases involving violent crimes, narcotics, and terrorism, underlines his dedication to public safety. His legislative efforts continue to focus on effective law enforcement and community protection.

The enhanced funding for Project Safe Neighborhoods aims to create safer neighborhoods by ensuring that felons in possession of firearms face stringent penalties. This initiative not only targets immediate threats but also serves as a deterrent, aiming to reduce the overall incidence of gun violence.

As Pennsylvania commits to this crucial program, the state sets an example for comprehensive approaches to public safety. Through rigorous prosecution and community-focused strategies, Project Safe Neighborhoods strives to build a safer future for all residents.
