HARRISBURG, PA — State Senator John I. Kane announced that the 9th Senatorial District is set to receive more than $3 million in grant funding from the Department of Community and Economic Development’s Multimodal Transportation Fund. This infusion of funds, approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority on March 26, 2024, is poised to markedly enhance safety, accessibility, and growth across several communities in Chester and Delaware Counties.

The Multimodal Transportation Fund, a cornerstone of Pennsylvania’s commitment to revitalizing its transportation infrastructure, aims to support a wide array of projects. These range from the rehabilitation of roads and sidewalks to the enhancement of pedestrian safety and the development of transit-oriented spaces. The fund represents an effort to not only improve the physical landscape but also to foster more connected, vibrant communities.

Senator Kane, emphasizing the impact of the grants, remarked, “These grants represent a substantial investment in the infrastructure of our communities. They’ll be put to use enhancing safety, improving accessibility, and promoting growth in our district.”

In Chester County, a notable allocation of $750,000 will fund improvements to East Baltimore Pike and Schoolhouse Road, a project that underscores the initiative’s focus on enhancing vital thoroughfares for the safety and convenience of residents.

Delaware County will see a variety of projects, including pedestrian crosswalk improvements in Aston Township, with an allocation of $377,706, and the construction of Phase 2 of the Chester Creek Trail, receiving $300,000. These projects reflect a broader trend towards making communities more walkable and safe for pedestrians. Additionally, the installation of flashing beacons near Wallingford Elementary School by Nether Providence Township, an investment of $208,200, directly addresses concerns around child pedestrian safety.

Moreover, roadway improvements at West Chester Pike and North Crum Road by Edgmont Lot B-1, LP, with a grant of $734,640, and the creation of a pedestrian-friendly environment at the intersection of Chichester Avenue and Market Street by Lower Chichester Township, receiving $442,152, highlight the fund’s role in transforming key intersections into safer, more navigable spaces for all.

The grants represent a collaborative effort between state and local officials to address the pressing infrastructure needs within their communities. By focusing on projects that improve pedestrian safety, enhance connectivity, and promote sustainable development, the Multimodal Transportation Fund grants are set to make tangible improvements in the daily lives of residents in the 9th Senatorial District.

As these projects move from planning to execution, they symbolize a significant step forward in Pennsylvania’s journey towards creating more livable, accessible, and economically vibrant communities. The investments made today are expected to pay dividends well into the future, as they lay the groundwork for a transportation network that meets the evolving needs of the Commonwealth’s residents.
