BELLEFONTE, PA — Pennsylvania’s rural communities are confronting a critical juncture as they strive to revitalize their economies amid declining populations and fading traditional industries like coal mining and manufacturing. State officials and industry leaders gathered in Bellefonte to discuss strategies for economic development and job creation, focusing on long-term sustainability.

During a tour and subsequent roundtable discussion hosted by Rep. Paul Takac, the House Majority Policy Committee explored innovative solutions to these challenges. The tour included Actuated Medical, an innovative company that expanded significantly during the pandemic, producing vital personal protective equipment and developing unique medical devices, such as a feeding tube clearing device first used at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Rep. Paul Takac emphasized the urgency of supporting rural economies to prevent further population decline. “The lack of good-paying jobs and opportunities is leading to a falling population, as young people move away, with a corresponding decrease in local small businesses and services,” he stated.

The roundtable discussion highlighted the impact of the Rural Jobs and Investment Tax Credit Program, which has been instrumental in fostering job creation in the state. Additionally, the PA Agriculture Innovation Fund, championed by Takac, was praised for providing $10 million in grants to farmers and agribusinesses to adopt advanced technologies and practices.

Policy Committee Chairman Ryan Bizzarro praised the collaborative efforts to discover policies that can drive sustainable growth in rural Pennsylvania. He acknowledged the contributions of entrepreneurs and investors present at the meeting, noting that their insights are vital for crafting effective economic policies.

The session featured insights from key figures such as Dr. Maureen L. Mulvihill, CEO of Actuated Medical, and Dr. Kyle Kopko, executive director of the Center for Rural Pennsylvania. Their testimonies underscored the importance of targeted investments and innovative approaches to ensure rural communities thrive.

As Pennsylvania navigates these economic challenges, the commitment to fostering dialogue and collaboration remains strong. The initiatives discussed at the roundtable offer hope for a revitalized rural economy, poised to adapt and flourish in a changing economic landscape.
