PENNSYLVANIA — State Representative Chris Pielli, D-Chester, announced the adoption of his House Resolution 275 by the state House. The resolution designates December 16, 2023, as “Battle of the Bulge Day” in Pennsylvania, commemorating the significant contributions of U.S. troops during one of World War II’s most pivotal battles.
The resolution, adopted on December 13, 2023, with an overwhelming vote of 202-1, aims to honor the efforts and sacrifices of thousands of U.S. troops, particularly those from Pennsylvania. It underscores the heroism displayed during the Battle of the Bulge, a crucial turning point in World War II that involved intense fighting in freezing conditions.
As part of the resolution, the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs has been tasked with creating, publishing, and presenting educational materials about the Battle of the Bulge. These materials will highlight the bravery and sacrifice of Pennsylvania soldiers, airmen, and military units, with a special focus on the state’s own 28th Infantry Division.
Pielli, an Army veteran himself, expressed his pride in passing the legislation. He emphasized the crucial role Pennsylvania troops played in the historic battle.
“Without the courage and sacrifice of Pennsylvania troops, in particular our own 28th Infantry Division, the history of this battle and the war might have been told very differently,” Pielli said. “I’m proud to have passed this legislation with the help of my colleagues in the state House. Because of their support, we can highlight the heroism of Pennsylvania’s 28th Division units toward this crucial effort and will enable the DMVA to start preparing for commemorating the 80th anniversary of Pennsylvania’s tremendous contribution to this historic battle.”
The designation of “Battle of the Bulge Day” is a fitting tribute to the heroism displayed by Pennsylvania’s troops. It ensures their bravery and sacrifice will be remembered, especially as the state prepares to commemorate the battle’s 80th anniversary in 2024.
