WEST CHESTER, PA — A fierce summer storm recently hit Chester County, felling trees and power lines. Despite the chaos, the County’s park rangers were celebrated with a special proclamation from the Chester County Commissioners for World Ranger Day.

Instead of attending the Commissioners’ meeting in person, Park Rangers Michael Trzaska, Patrick Conlin, and Sissy Pavolic were busy assessing park conditions and aiding in storm cleanup. Thanks to technology, they accepted the proclamation via Zoom.

Chester County Commissioners’ Chair Josh Maxwell praised the rangers for their dedication. “Our County Park Rangers patrol more than 4,000 acres of park land and more than 25 miles of trails. They look after our natural, historic, and recreational treasures, and they lead some fantastic free programs for all ages year-round,” said Maxwell.

He added, “They are some of the first on the scene to assess our parks and trails and ensure they are safe when mother nature throws storms our way. While we would have liked to recognize them in person, we were pleased that we could let them know via Zoom how much we appreciate them and the work they do.”

In addition to the proclamation, Chester County will illuminate the Historic Courthouse in green on the evening of July 31 to mark World Ranger Day.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities

Chester County’s park rangers enforce park rules, manage natural resources, provide emergency medical services, and assist visitors. They serve over 1.5 million visitors annually across seven parks and three regional trails. Rangers also host more than 150 educational and volunteer programs on topics such as local history, birding, fishing, and kayaking.

Community Engagement on World Ranger Day

For the first time, rangers from six counties in Southeastern Pennsylvania and Maryland will gather at Warwick County Park on World Ranger Day. The event, held on July 31, will feature partnership and community outreach activities.

From 10:00 am to noon, the public can enjoy “Touch a Truck” opportunities with various ranger vehicles, a children’s scavenger hunt, pop-up archery, and disc golf. Rangers will answer questions and discuss what it takes to be a park ranger. No registration is needed for this free program.

Chester County’s commitment to recognizing and supporting its park rangers highlights the vital role they play in maintaining and enhancing the region’s natural spaces. Their efforts ensure that parks and trails remain safe and enjoyable for all visitors, even in the aftermath of severe weather.
