CHESTER SPRINGS, PA — Local officials, agricultural advocates, and industry leaders gathered this week at Milky Way Farm in Chester Springs to commemorate the expansion of AgConnect, a program designed to support agricultural businesses, promote farming, and strengthen Pennsylvania’s agricultural workforce. The event, hosted by the Matthews family at their historic Milky Way Farm, also included a special Century Farm recognition to honor the family’s 100-plus years of farming.
Chester County Commissioners Josh Maxwell, Marian Moskowitz, and Eric Roe opened the event, underlining the economic and cultural significance of agriculture in the region. “Agriculture is big business in Chester County – worth $736 million,” said the commissioners. “It’s crucial that we not only promote the importance of farming but also provide direct support to farmers and agricultural industries, from preserving farmland to financing new technologies and training a skilled workforce.”
AgConnect, initially launched by the Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC) as a workforce-centered initiative, has since been restructured and expanded through a partnership with Chester County Government. The program now serves as a comprehensive resource hub for farmers, offering financial tools, workforce development, and avenues to promote local agricultural goods. It also aligns its efforts with the county’s Agriculture Economic Development Strategic Plan, which focuses on bolstering the economic vitality of the agricultural sector.
Gary Smith, CEO of the Chester County Economic Development Council, expressed his enthusiasm for the program’s evolution. “We officially recognize AgConnect today as a full-service economic development partnership,” said Smith. “It will act as the nucleus for supporting our first industry, agriculture, by leveraging resources to benefit farmers, agribusinesses, and the larger community.”
Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding underscored the program’s importance, stating, “AgConnect is pivotal in securing the future of Pennsylvania’s farming industry. By linking farmers and agribusinesses with critical resources and fostering opportunities for the next generation, it ensures resilience and innovation in our agricultural community. Programs like AgConnect sustain the industry that feeds and fuels our state.”
The gathering also highlighted a significant moment for the Matthews family, owners and operators of Milky Way Farm since 1902, as Secretary Redding presented them with a Pennsylvania Century Farm designation. The honor celebrates farms that have remained in continuous operation under the same family for 100 years or more.
“It is truly an honor to recognize the Matthews family’s contributions to agriculture and education,” Redding said. “Their dedication, through both stewardship and engagement with the community, epitomizes the enduring legacy of Pennsylvania farming.”
Over four generations, the Matthews family has expanded Milky Way Farm into a multifaceted business that includes dairy farming, agritourism activities such as pumpkin picking and hayrides, and the Chester Springs Creamery. The farm also hosts educational programs for school groups and summer camps to immerse visitors in hands-on farming experiences.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Carolyn Matthews Eaglehouse expressed their gratitude. “The Matthews family is honored to have farmed Milky Way Farm for four generations. We appreciate the support that has helped us sustain our operation, and we aim to continue farming for future generations,” she said.
AgConnect’s expansion further cements Chester County’s role as a leader in advancing agriculture and supporting its community of farmers. With the program’s emphasis on workforce development, business growth, and public engagement, officials expressed optimism for the future, envisioning a robust agricultural sector that remains rooted in Pennsylvania’s history while adapting to modern challenges.
“This isn’t just about preserving tradition,” Secretary Redding noted. “It’s about laying the groundwork for a thriving, innovative agricultural ecosystem that will serve Pennsylvania’s residents and economy for generations to come.”
