WEST CHESTER, PA — The YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) has announced the addition of five new members to its Association Board of Directors as part of its ongoing commitment to public health and community well-being in Chester County. Katie Angstadt, Brandy Smith, John Walker, Tia Wilson, and John Young have joined more than 30 returning board members under the leadership of Board Chair Dr. Scott Heinerichs.
The new board members bring expertise from organizations such as Comcast and Lincoln Financial, further bolstering the strategic direction of YGBW. The board benefits from a variety of professional perspectives, including returning members from Main Line Health, the Chester County Health Department, and Lincoln University.
“Many people may not realize the broad range of expertise required to run our organization, locations and programs,” said Bertram L. Lawson II, YGBW President and CEO. “Having an engaged, diverse and robust Board of Directors that bring their abilities, network and willingness to advance our mission as partners is essential to our success.”
Focus on Public Health Initiatives
YGBW aims to address critical public health needs through innovative initiatives and evidence-based programs. Earlier this year, the organization launched the Fit Truk, a mobile wellness hub designed to bring health services to underserved communities in Chester County.
Looking ahead, YGBW plans to introduce several new programs, including Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring, Healthy Weight and Your Child, and Walk with Ease. These offerings will complement existing initiatives, such as LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a free 12-week health program for cancer survivors that includes a complimentary membership for participants during their recovery.
“It is crucial for members of our Board of Directors to bring varied knowledge and experience to support our organization as we work toward achieving an ambitious set of strategic goals for 2025,” Lawson added. “I am honored that these talented individuals have committed to volunteering their time, talent and resources on our board.”
Meeting Community Needs
YGBW employs over 1,600 staff annually to support its wide-ranging programs and operations, which include aquatics, youth sports, behavior specialists, wellness leaders, and more. Building on this foundation, the organization remains focused on strengthening local communities, promoting accessibility for all, and becoming an employer of choice in Chester County.
With the expertise of its new board members and a clear emphasis on public health, YGBW is poised to expand its impact across Chester County in the years to come. These efforts reflect the organization’s mission to promote wellness, inclusivity, and strong community connections.
