WEST CHESTER, PA — In a significant acknowledgment of dedication to public service, Villanova University’s Public Interest Fellowship Program (PIFP) presented its first-ever Public Interest Distinguished Service Award to John Rafferty, a partner and litigator at Gawthrop Greenwood. The award ceremony took place before an unprecedented gathering of 350 attendees during PIFP’s annual auction event, which plays a crucial role in fundraising for students committed to legal work in the public interest sector.
Sarah Urie, a board member of PIFP, lauded Rafferty for his unwavering dedication to the public good, highlighting his career-spanning contributions that have made a tangible difference in the lives of many. “John’s exceptional work, from his efforts to combat human trafficking during his Fulbright Fellowship to his advocacy for victims of labor trafficking and child abuse, embodies the core values of PIFP,” Urie stated.
Rafferty’s journey in public service began with his tenure in the U.S. Navy, where he was stationed in Bahrain and volunteered for the Migrant Workers Protection Society. His commendable service earned him several military honors, including the Navy Achievement Medal and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. As a law student at Villanova, Rafferty’s involvement in the law school’s Asylum Clinic marked a pivotal moment when he successfully represented a Honduran woman and her children, securing their release from detention and a fresh start in the United States.
His subsequent Fulbright Fellowship allowed Rafferty to conduct extensive research on human trafficking in Ecuador, further solidifying his commitment to public interest law. Back in Philadelphia, he continued to advocate for immigration benefits for victims of labor trafficking. Rafferty’s dedication to protecting the vulnerable extended to his role as an Assistant District Attorney in Chester County, where he joined the Child Abuse Unit and later contributed significantly to a case that helped a survivor of trafficking regain parental rights.
Beyond his legal practice, Rafferty has served on the board of advisors for Villanova Law School’s Institute to Address Commercial Sexual Exploitation and is the chair of the board of directors of LCH Health and Community Services, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to community service and advocacy.
The recognition of Rafferty by PIFP not only celebrates his individual achievements but also underscores the vital role of legal professionals in advancing public interest causes. Through its support of students pursuing careers in public service law, PIFP has facilitated legal representation for the underserved across multiple states and countries, raising over $1 million in the past 25 years. Rafferty’s distinguished service award highlights the importance of such efforts in fostering a more just and equitable society.
As the legal community and broader public reflect on Rafferty’s contributions, his story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have in promoting justice and supporting the most vulnerable among us. His accolades not only honor his past achievements but also inspire future generations of legal professionals to dedicate their skills to the public interest.
