MALVERN, PA — Vanguard Charitable announced the recent appointment of Luis M. Viceira to its board of trustees. Viceira is the George E. Bates Professor in the Finance Unit and Senior Associate Dean Emeritus at Harvard Business School (HBS). He also serves as a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER).
Viceira’s nearly three decades of financial expertise will support Vanguard Charitable’s mission to increase philanthropy and maximize its impact.
“We’re pleased to welcome Luis onto our board,” said Rebecca Moffett, president of Vanguard Charitable. “Luis’ expertise in investment management and capital markets will enhance our ability to serve our donors and further their philanthropic impact through donor-advised funds (DAFs). His perspective will be an asset to our board, organization, donors, and grantees.”
Viceira has been a faculty member at HBS since 1998. He teaches finance courses in the MBA, Executive Education, and Ph.D. programs. He also holds leadership positions, including co-chairing the Harvard Business School Investment Management Workshop and the Asset Management Conference for HBS alumni.
“It’s a sincere pleasure to join the Vanguard Charitable Board of Trustees,” said Viceira. “A DAF is a powerful giving vehicle, and Vanguard Charitable’s approach to maximize that power through low-cost strategic investments is especially compelling. I’m eager to be involved in what’s ahead for Vanguard Charitable and the industry at large regarding strategic giving.”
Viceira’s experience includes directing, consulting, and advising various financial institutions and nonprofit organizations globally. He has authored multiple finance journal articles and HBS case studies, receiving awards like the TIAA-CREF Paul Samuelson Award and the CFA Institute Graham and Dodd award.
Viceira holds a bachelor’s degree from Universidad Autónoma in Madrid and a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University.
Vanguard Charitable looks forward to leveraging Viceira’s extensive financial knowledge to advance its philanthropic initiatives.
