MALVERN, PA — A new report from Vanguard Charitable, a leading philanthropic organization, sheds light on the significant impact donor-advised funds (DAFs) have on charitable giving. Titled “Why Giving Matters: Responsive granting with donor-advised funds spurs greater total giving,” the report offers comprehensive insights garnered from over a decade of data from more than 32,000 DAF accounts, alongside donor survey responses regarding their giving sentiment and behavior.

The study found a notable increase in both expected and responsive giving among Vanguard Charitable donors. Specifically, those who utilized their DAFs for unexpected grants—such as in response to natural disasters or humanitarian crises—gave 39% more than those who solely used their DAFs for anticipated, recurring donations. This pattern suggests that engaging in spontaneous acts of generosity not only fulfills immediate needs but also stimulates a donor’s overall contribution to their chosen causes.

Rebecca Moffett, president of Vanguard Charitable, highlighted the dual role of DAFs in facilitating both planned and impromptu giving. “This year’s ‘Why Giving Matters’ report underscores the essential role DAFs play in facilitating not only long-term planned giving but unexpected giving as well,” Moffett stated. The flexibility offered by DAFs, combined with Vanguard Charitable’s quality investments and low-fee structure, ensures that a greater portion of donor contributions reaches nonprofits in need.

The report emphasizes how DAFs allow donors to be nimble in achieving their philanthropic goals, enabling them to swiftly respond to emergent needs while continuing to support their core charitable interests. This dynamic approach results in increased support across various types of giving, ultimately enhancing the total amount donated.

Survey findings further reinforce the positive impact of responsive granting. More than three-quarters of individuals who give unexpectedly reported that such giving augments their total contributions rather than substituting for planned donations. Additionally, nearly half of the nonprofits that received an unexpected grant from Vanguard Charitable were awarded a second grant by the same donor in the future, indicating the establishment of ongoing support relationships.

Tunde Wackman, Chief Development Officer of World Central Kitchen, spoke to the importance of both expected and unexpected donations. “Expected giving is the backbone to sustaining our ongoing operations… In times of crisis, unexpected giving becomes a lifeline for our ability to scale activations, providing immediate relief and support where it is needed most,” Wackman explained. This synergy between different forms of giving enables organizations like World Central Kitchen to deliver aid effectively during critical moments.

The Vanguard Charitable report not only highlights the growing trend of responsive giving but also illustrates the broader implications for the philanthropic sector. As donors become more agile in their giving strategies, leveraging the benefits of DAFs, nonprofits stand to gain from increased funding that supports both their long-term missions and immediate needs. This evolution in giving patterns points to a future where philanthropy can more effectively address the challenges facing society today, demonstrating the enduring power and potential of generosity.
