MALVERN, PA — Vanguard Charitable announced a landmark year in philanthropy, granting an unprecedented $3.1 billion to over 62,000 nonprofits in 2024. This achievement marks the eighth consecutive year of record-setting contributions for the donor-advised fund (DAF) sponsor, reflecting a near 20% increase from 2023 and nearly doubling the dollar amount granted since 2019.
“Our ability to deliver innovative and timely resources for our donors has been crucial in achieving these results,” said Rebecca Moffett, president of Vanguard Charitable. “Amid global disruptions to philanthropy in recent years, we’ve prioritized technology, cost reductions, and rapid service to keep pace with the increasing needs of nonprofits.”
Faster Granting to Nonprofits
Vanguard Charitable has significantly accelerated the speed at which grants are distributed to nonprofits. Since 2019, the organization reports a 20% improvement in the time grants take to reach their recipients, thanks to advanced due diligence processes and the implementation of Grant Payments through PayPal. These enhancements cut delivery time from weeks to mere hours, enabling nonprofits to respond to urgent community needs more effectively.
One example of this impact is Reno-based LEAD with Horses, which used the expedited funding to expand its operations. “The grant from Vanguard Charitable was game-changing,” said Jeane Spada-Allgood, executive director. “We are now able to enhance disability services, mental health counseling, and youth development programs.”
Expanding Reach and Lower Costs
The data shows donors are supporting an increasingly diverse array of nonprofits. The number of unique charities funded by Vanguard Charitable donors has grown by 40% in the last five years, with significant grants directed to organizations like Doctors Without Borders, World Central Kitchen, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Additionally, Vanguard Charitable’s commitment to cost efficiency continues to benefit donors. The DAF sponsor reduced its average all-in fees to 0.44% in 2024, a 10% drop from 2019. This translates to roughly $10 million more available for grantmaking, amplifying the impact of every charitable dollar.
Mark Froelich, chief financial officer at Vanguard Charitable, emphasized, “Our low fees ensure more donor dollars are directed toward causes that matter most, allowing donors to extend their philanthropic plans and support for years to come.”
Shaping the Future of Philanthropy
With over $3.1 billion granted in 2024, Vanguard Charitable is setting a new standard for donor-advised funds and philanthropy. Its innovative solutions, cost-efficiency, and rapid granting pave the way for transforming how donors and nonprofits collaborate to address critical needs.
Looking ahead, Vanguard Charitable aims to build on this momentum, further empowering donors to support diverse causes while helping nonprofits achieve their missions in an increasingly complex world.
