South Mill Champs Partners with Sprouts to Launch Eco-Friendly Mushroom Packaging

South Mill Champs

KENNETT SQUARE, PA — South Mill Champs has unveiled an innovative initiative to reduce environmental impact through a partnership with Sprouts Farmers Market in Denver, Colorado. The collaboration will bring mushrooms packaged in flow-wrapped bamboo tills to store shelves, marking the first rollout of this eco-conscious packaging solution.

The new system combines bamboo tills with BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) film. This advanced perforated film allows excess moisture to evaporate, improving freshness, extending shelf life, and preventing discoloration due to condensation. Unlike standard plastic tills, the bamboo tills are fully recyclable and biodegradable. Additionally, bamboo is known for its fast renewability, low water consumption, and minimal environmental footprint, as it requires no chemical coatings and is produced without fossil fuels.

“This innovative approach reflects our commitment to sustainability from beginning to end,” explained Sandy Malouff-Quintana, Vice President of Fresh Sales at South Mill Champs. “Packaging can be a powerful tool. By innovating with eco-friendly materials, we’re showing customers and partners that we take environmental responsibility seriously.”

South Mill Champs’ decision is part of its broader dedication to sustainable farming practices. The bamboo tills reduce overall material waste, adhering to the company’s goal of minimizing its ecological footprint without compromising product quality.

Sprouts Farmers Market will begin offering mushrooms in these new 8oz flow-wrapped bamboo tills this month. With this launch, South Mill Champs aims to set a standard for sustainable packaging across the fresh produce industry and inspire businesses to transition to more eco-friendly practices.

The company anticipates expanding this packaging model to additional retailers and markets, reaffirming its commitment to both sustainability and fresh, high-quality food solutions.
