WAYNE, PA — Trinseo (NYSE: TSE) announced its new lineup of electric vehicle (EV) battery solutions to be showcased at The Battery Show Europe in Stuttgart, Germany, from June 18-20, 2024. The company will highlight two key technologies that aim to enhance battery performance and protection.
One of the featured innovations is a thermoplastic battery casing produced using the Direct Long Fiber Thermoplastic (DLFT) molding process. This process offers EV manufacturers an alternative to heavy metal casings, providing high-performance thermoplastic trays and covers without sacrificing protection. The thermoplastic material leads to shorter manufacturing cycle times, increased part toughness, and greater design flexibility for complex geometries. Lighter weight casings can improve energy efficiency and range in EVs compared to metal casings. Additionally, the thermoplastic offers design freedom, electric insulation, heat insulation, and fire resistance.
Chief Technology Officer Han Hendriks emphasized the importance of innovation in both external and internal components of electric vehicles. “In addition to the benefits of weight reduction, our thermoplastic casing material is available in grades containing recycled polycarbonate content produced by our in-house PC dissolution technology,” said Hendriks.
Trinseo will also showcase its VOLTABOND™ aqueous-based anode binder. This binder binds the graphite and conductivity agent powder to the foil current collector of a battery. VOLTABOND™ binders offer high peel strength, low direct current internal resistance (DCIR), and low re-bounce. Its unique chemical structure enhances battery life by providing resistance to electrolyte dissolution.
“By improving electrical conductivity, structural integrity, cyclability, and energy density with our VOLTABOND™ latex binders, we’re helping batteries last longer, charge faster, go farther, and perform better,” added Hendriks. “At less than one percent of the battery’s weight, we can make a big impact on performance characteristics that the industry seeks.”
Trinseo’s innovations aim to drive advancements in EV battery technology, addressing key industry needs for efficiency, durability, and performance.
