MALVERN, PA — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH), a global manufacturer and supplier of discrete semiconductors and passive electronic components, is set to revolutionize the electronics industry with its latest innovation. The company’s Optoelectronics group recently introduced a new fully integrated proximity sensor, the VCNL36828P, designed to enhance efficiency and performance in consumer applications.
This groundbreaking sensor combines a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL), a photodiode, an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), a 16-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC), and a smart dual I²C slave address. All these components are housed in a compact 2.0 mm by 1.0 mm by 0.5 mm surface-mount package, making it suitable for space-constrained applications.
The VCNL36828P boasts several improvements over previous-generation solutions. It offers a 20% smaller package and a 20% lower idle current of 5 μA, which can significantly reduce power consumption. Additionally, the sensor features a 40% higher sunlight cancellation up to 140 klx, thereby improving performance in bright light conditions.
With a range of 200 mm and a typical rated supply voltage of 1.8 V, this new device stands out for its superior proximity detection capabilities. As such, it’s expected to play a significant role in enhancing the efficiency of battery-powered devices, including smartphones, smartwatches, and wireless stereo earphones.
In these applications, the VCNL36828P can be utilized for automatic screen wake-up and turn-off functions and to detect whether users are wearing devices like VR/AR headsets, smart glasses, or earphones. Furthermore, the sensor’s smart dual I²C slave address eliminates the need for a multiplexer when connecting two proximity sensors, thereby reducing costs.
Another impressive feature of the VCNL36828P is its programmable interrupt function. This allows designers to specify high and low thresholds, reducing the need for continuous communication with the microcontroller. The sensor also uses intelligent cancellation to reduce cross-talk and a smart persistence scheme to ensure accurate sensing and faster response times.
Compliant with RoHS, halogen-free, and Vishay Green, the VCNL36828P further underlines Vishay’s commitment to sustainability. It operates at a peak wavelength of 940 nm, meaning it emits no visible “red-tail.”
The VCNL36828P is already available in samples and production quantities, with a lead time of 14 weeks. As consumer electronics continue to evolve, this advanced proximity sensor promises to be a game-changer, delivering improved performance, greater efficiency, and considerable cost savings.
