MALVERN, PA — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) has launched a new line of inrush current limiting positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistors, engineered to enhance performance in active charge and discharge circuits for both automotive and industrial applications. The Vishay BCcomponents PTCEL High Energy series stands out for its remarkable energy handling capability, reaching up to 340 J, which is significantly higher than other devices in high ambient temperatures.
These thermistors offer a broad spectrum of resistance values at 25 °C (R25), ranging from 150 Ω to 1.5 kΩ, and support high maximum voltages of 1200 VDC. This not only boosts efficiency but also reduces the number of components required, thus saving space and lowering costs in circuit designs. With a high switching temperature capability and operational range up to +105 °C, the series provides a heat capacity of 2.6 J/K across all resistance values.
AEC-Q200 qualified, these thermistors are self-protecting with no risk of overheating, making them ideal for use in AC/DC and DC/DC converters, DC-Link, battery management, and emergency discharge circuits. They also find applications in on-board chargers, home energy storage systems, heat pumps, motor drives, and welding equipment. The robust design withstands over 100,000 inrush power cycles and resists non-switching peak power up to 25 kW.
Constructed with a ceramic pellet soldered between two tinned CCS wires and encased in a UL 94 V-0 compliant high-temperature silicone lacquer, the PTCEL High Energy series is available in tape on reel packaging. This allows for automated handling by pick and place equipment, reducing placement costs. The thermistors offer a standard leadwire pitch of 10 mm, with additional options of 5.0 mm and 7.5 mm to accommodate various design needs. SPICE and 3D models are also available for these RoHS-compliant devices, providing designers with versatile options for their projects.
