Vishay Intertechnology Boosts Infrared Transceiver Capabilities Amid Growing Demand for Wireless Data Transmission

Vishay Intertechnology

MALVERN, PA — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) has announced significant upgrades to its TFBS4xx and TFDU4xx series of infrared (IR) transceiver modules for IrDA® applications. The enhancements include a 20% extension in link distance and improved electrostatic discharge (ESD) robustness to 2 kV, signaling the company’s commitment to meet the increasing demand for reliable wireless communication and data transmission.

These upgraded modules, which support data rates up to 115.2 kbit/s (SIR) and link distances of up to 1 meter, are designed for use in a range of devices such as energy meters, industrial automation controls, mobile phones, and medical equipment. A key feature of these modules is their low power consumption, with an idle supply current of less than 70 µA, dropping to less than 1 µA in shutdown mode. This feature enhances battery life in portable devices, a critical factor in today’s mobility-driven world.

Each device in the Vishay Semiconductors TFBS4xxx and TFDU4xxx series combines a PIN photodiode, an infrared emitter (IRED), and a low power control IC in a single package. Vishay has upgraded these IR transceivers using its latest in-house IC and surface emitter chip technology, ensuring long-term availability of IRDC products for its customers. Notably, these modules can replace existing devices without necessitating printed circuit board (PCB) redesigns, offering cost savings for manufacturers.

Compliant with the latest IrDA physical layer specification, these devices are backward-compatible and come in top- and side-view surface-mount packages. As enhanced solutions, they provide drop-in, plug-and-play replacements for existing devices in the series.

In addition, these RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, and Vishay Green devices are offered in a variety of package sizes. They feature a wide operating voltage range from 2.4 V to 5.5 V and an operating temperature range from -25 °C to +85 °C, making them versatile for numerous applications.
