MALVERN, PA — In a bid to bolster psychopharmacology education, HMP Global’s Psych Congress NP Institute has launched its new Online Learning Hub. This move marks a significant stride in providing psychiatric nurse practitioners with comprehensive resources to enhance their understanding of this complex field.
The Online Learning Hub is a virtual platform designed to keep nurse practitioners abreast of current medications and upcoming market releases. It aims to deepen their knowledge about classes of psychiatric medications, treatments, side effects, symptoms, diagnoses, and patient support throughout their mental health journey.
Julie Carbray, PhD, APRN, co-chair of the NP Institute, emphasized the pivotal role of nurse practitioners in today’s healthcare system. “Through the NP Institute meeting and Online Learning Hub, they can receive essential psychopharmacology education needed to provide the best care for each patient,” said Carbray, who is also a clinical professor of psychiatry and nursing at the University of Illinois Chicago.
The launch of the Online Learning Hub comes ahead of the second annual NP Institute conference. Scheduled for March 20 – 23, 2024, at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego, the conference offers both in-person and digital options for continuing education. In its inaugural year, it drew a sold-out crowd of over 800 attendees, including psychiatric field NPs and more than 20 sponsors and exhibitors.
Co-Chair Andrew Penn, RN, MS, NP, CNS, APRN-BC, highlighted the increased demand for mental health and psychiatric services. Penn, who is a clinical professor at the University of California, San Francisco, noted that the NP Institute meeting and Online Learning Hub aim to fill the knowledge gap for NPs and provide a platform for them to connect with field experts.
The Online Learning Hub and conference offer an array of topics, including neurobiology insights, comprehensive approaches to psychiatric diagnosis, and the impact of comorbid substance use on psychiatric care. Other sessions delve into perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, geriatric depression, dementia, medication management, and prescription stimulants and non-stimulant therapies.
The importance of this initiative to psychopharmacology education cannot be overstated. It provides an accessible, convenient, and comprehensive resource for psychiatric NPs to stay updated with the rapidly evolving field of psychopharmacology. By doing so, it ensures that they are equipped with the latest knowledge and skills to provide high-quality care to patients and effectively manage their practices.
The NP Institute Online Learning Hub is a year-round resource supplementing learning from the conference. The program is designed and accredited for psychiatric NPs, including those in general, primary care, and family practice, and caters to clinicians in the early stages of their practice as well as experienced NPs seeking updates and continuing psychopharmacology education.
