WEST CHESTER, PA — AccessLex Institute, a nonprofit organization committed to positively influencing legal education, is taking proactive steps to prepare law school students for the upcoming NextGen bar exam. The initiative, launched in May 2023, represents a significant research and development investment into future methods of bar preparation.
The Building Bar Skills Initiative, led by the AccessLex Center for Legal Education Excellence, aims to ready nearly 200 member law schools for the rollout of the NextGen bar exam in July 2026. This forward-thinking program involves collaborative work from Module Building Teams, composed of doctrinal and skills faculty from five different law schools. These teams are creating and testing innovative curriculum units designed to foster the skills that will be assessed in the NextGen bar exam.
“The Bar Skills Modules serve a dual purpose: acquainting law students with the skills assessed in the NextGen bar exam, and providing them the opportunity to put those newfound skills into practice,” said Joel Chanvisanuruk, Director of Programs for Academic and Bar Success at AccessLex Institute.
The initiative represents an agile response to the challenges posed by the NextGen bar exam. By harnessing the collective expertise of professionals from AccessLex member law schools, the organization is addressing the demands of the new exam head-on.
In addition to the Building Bar Skills Initiative, AccessLex Institute’s supporting organization, Helix Bar Review, is developing Helix NextGen. This comprehensive review course is tailored to align with the Foundational Concepts and Principles and Foundational Skills being tested on the NextGen bar exam. Helix NextGen is slated to be available to bar exam takers in March 2026.
AccessLex Institute has been at the forefront of improving access and positively influencing legal education since 1983. With its latest initiative, the organization continues to demonstrate its commitment to helping aspiring lawyers transition into fulfilled professionals, particularly as they navigate the new challenges posed by the NextGen bar exam.
