MALVERN, PA — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) has announced the acquisition of Ametherm, Inc., a leader in inrush current limiters and sensing thermistors, for approximately $31.5 million in cash.
Ametherm specializes in precision thermistors used in various high-energy applications, including automotive, industrial, aerospace, defense, and medical markets. The company’s products include NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) and PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) thermistors, known for their reliability in circuit protection and temperature sensing.
Joel Smejkal, President and CEO of Vishay, highlighted the strategic importance of the acquisition. “Acquiring Ametherm is an illustration of two of the eight strategic levers Vishay is employing to accelerate growth. We are expanding our product portfolio and filling technology gaps through M&A and enhancing innovation to support deeper technical engagement with our customers. Ametherm brings Vishay small package sizes, high voltages, and high-quality PTC inrush current limiters and NTC temperature sensors required in all high energy applications,” said Smejkal.
Ametherm’s products are crucial for modern applications, such as electric vehicles (EVs) that require robust components capable of handling high voltages. The company’s technology supports current market needs, like 800VDC for EVs, and prepares for future demands up to 2000VDC in pre-charge circuits. Vishay plans to leverage its global sales and marketing network to promote Ametherm’s products and integrate them into its regional manufacturing operations.
Marc Zandman, Executive Chairman of the Board, emphasized the importance of innovation in Vishay’s strategy. “Innovation, whether organic or acquired, has always been important to Vishay. The Board supports management’s continued investments to more broadly serve our addressable market and to expand our product and technology portfolio,” said Zandman.
Vishay’s Power Play: Revolutionizing the Electronics Market
This acquisition strengthens Vishay’s position in the electronics component market. By integrating Ametherm’s advanced thermistors into its product lineup, Vishay aims to enhance its technological capabilities and offer more comprehensive solutions to its customers.
The implications of this acquisition extend beyond immediate financial gains. For Vishay, it represents a strategic move to diversify its offerings and address evolving market demands. As industries like automotive and aerospace increasingly rely on advanced electronic components, having a diverse and reliable product portfolio becomes crucial.
Moreover, this acquisition highlights the broader trend of consolidation in the electronics industry, where companies seek to bolster their competitive edge through strategic mergers and acquisitions. For customers, it means access to more innovative and integrated solutions, potentially leading to better performance and reliability in their applications.
In conclusion, Vishay’s acquisition of Ametherm not only enhances its product portfolio but also positions the company to meet future technological challenges and opportunities. This strategic move underscores Vishay’s dedication to innovation and growth, ensuring it remains a key player in the global electronics market.
