Saint-Gobain Acquires International Cellulose Corporation, Bolsters Leadership in Sustainable Construction

Saint-Gobain North America

MALVERN, PA — Saint-Gobain, a global leader in the building materials industry, has announced the acquisition of business assets of International Cellulose Corporation (ICC), a prominent manufacturer of commercial specialty insulation products. The move is set to cement Saint-Gobain’s leadership position in light and sustainable construction.

The ICC acquisition brings with it a portfolio of spray-on thermal and acoustical finishing systems that align with Saint-Gobain’s commitment to sustainability and energy conservation. ICC products, which are manufactured from natural plant-based fibers with high recycled content, meet some of the world’s most stringent sustainability standards, including LEED®V.4 and GREENGUARD Gold certifications.

Furthermore, cellulose, a primary raw material in ICC products, contains high levels of sequestered carbon, reinforcing Saint-Gobain’s pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Mark Rayfield, President and CEO of Saint-Gobain North America and CertainTeed, said, “International Cellulose Corporation is a perfect fit for Saint-Gobain North America with its plant fiber-based spray insulation products that allow commercial spaces to be more energy efficient, safe and comfortable.”

With around 50 employees at its manufacturing site in Houston, Texas, ICC will join CertainTeed’s Commercial Building and Infrastructure business in the Americas Region. The acquisition will enable Saint-Gobain to position its Commercial Building and Infrastructure (CBI) business as a leader in cementitious fireproofing and sprayed acoustic insulation. This complements Saint-Gobain’s existing steel fireproofing solutions and contractor offerings.

Moreover, ICC’s product portfolio complements existing Saint-Gobain insulation solutions such as GCP’s fireproofing products, acquired by Saint-Gobain in 2022, and CertainTeed’s interior insulation portfolio. The acquisition also includes the assets of Ecosorb International, a subsidiary of International Cellulose Corporation.

The ICC acquisition is the latest in a series of strategic growth investments by Saint-Gobain in North America. Recent initiatives include the construction of a new roofing manufacturing and distribution center in Bryan, Texas; the acquisition of the remaining equity interest and assets from Seven Hills Paperboard LLC; the $1.325 billion acquisition of Building Products of Canada Corp.; a $235 million expansion of its CertainTeed Gypsum facility in Palatka, Florida; and the opening of its CertainTeed Corners facility in Social Circle, Georgia.

Last year, Saint-Gobain also acquired the rights to technology from recycling partner Asphaltica, which will enhance its ability to recycle asphalt shingle waste. In 2022, it announced the acquisitions of both Kaycan and GCP, further strengthening its leadership positions in siding and construction chemicals respectively.

With the acquisition of ICC, Saint-Gobain is poised to further its leadership in the realm of sustainable construction, offering innovative insulation solutions that promote energy efficiency while adhering to rigorous environmental standards.
