EXTON, PA — Bentley Systems, Incorporated (Nasdaq: BSY) recently announced its acquisition of Cesium, a leader in 3D geospatial technology. Known for its open platform and the widely adopted 3D Tiles standard, Cesium enables developers globally to create powerful 3D geospatial applications. This strategic move allows Bentley to integrate Cesium’s capabilities with its iTwin Platform, enhancing digital twin solutions used by engineering and construction firms worldwide.
According to Nicholas Cumins, Bentley CEO, “A 3D geospatial view is the most intuitive way for owner-operators and engineering services providers to search for, query, and visualize information about infrastructure networks and assets.” This integration allows infrastructure professionals to make informed decisions within a comprehensive 3D environment.
Patrick Cozzi, Cesium CEO, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “Joining Bentley marks an important milestone for Cesium…founded on open standards and open-source technologies.” The merger broadens the scope for developers, from small start-ups to global enterprises, fostering growth and innovation.
Komatsu Ltd., a major player in construction equipment, exemplifies the benefits of this integration. Chikashi Shike, Executive Officer at Komatsu, noted, “With Cesium as part of Bentley, we can further enrich our Smart Construction digital twins with engineering models, subsurface data, and more, for safer and more efficient construction projects.”
The acquisition aligns with the trend towards open standards in the geospatial industry, as highlighted by Peter Rabley, CEO of the Open Geospatial Consortium. The move promises to expand Bentley’s influence in the infrastructure sector, offering enhanced data-centric solutions through the combined expertise of Cesium and iTwin. Financial details of the acquisition remain undisclosed.
