Leadership Shift at The Institutes: New Chair and Vice Chair Bring Extensive Experience

MALVERN, PAThe Institutes recently appointed new leadership to its Board of Trustees. W. Robert Berkley Jr., the president and CEO of W. R. Berkley Corporation, will serve as the new Chair. John C. (Jack) Roche, the president and CEO of The Hanover Insurance Group, steps in as Vice Chair.

Peter L. Miller, CPCU, president and CEO of The Institutes, expressed his enthusiasm. “We are thrilled that Rob and Jack will continue to serve on The Institutes Board as our new Chair and Vice Chair, respectively,” he said. Miller highlighted their significant experience in risk management and insurance.

Berkley has been with Berkley since 1997. He started as an investment banker at Merrill Lynch and Co. and held various roles at Berkley, including President and Chief Operating Officer. He’s also on several prestigious boards, such as St. John’s University Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance, and Actuarial Science.

Berkley expressed his honor at the appointment. “People are our most important asset in the insurance and risk management business, and The Institutes provides tremendous opportunities for education and development,” he said.

Jack Roche joined The Hanover in 2006 and became president and CEO in 2017. His background includes over 30 years in the property and casualty insurance sector. Roche also serves on several boards, including the same board at St. John’s University as Berkley.

Roche shared his excitement about his new role. “This organization makes a significant impact on our industry, as risk management is the critical focal point of how we best serve our independent agents and policyholders,” he said.

Miller also thanked outgoing Chair John M. Howard for his service. Under Howard’s leadership, The Institutes saw significant growth in their educational capabilities.

The new appointments are set to strengthen The Institutes’ mission to educate, elevate, and connect professionals in the risk management and insurance sectors.
