PHILADELPHIA, PA — Flyers Charities this week announced a sustainability partnership with West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc., for the upcoming 2023 Gritty 5K presented by Penn Medicine on October 21 to build on their ongoing commitment to sustainability initiatives. Last year, in partnership with Sustainable Solutions Corporation, Flyers Charities announced that the 2022 Gritty 5K was certified by GreenCircle Certified as a ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ event. Flyers Charities identified ways to divert over 550+ pounds of waste with 80 percent of the waste being recycled, composted or donated, with the remainder going to a waste-to-energy plant, and will this year partner with West to implement even more ways to keep Gritty 5K a sustainable event.

“We are proud to not only host incredible events but to do so in a way that helps preserve our environment,” said Cindy Stutman, Executive Director of Flyers Charities. “Sustainability is one of our key focus areas and we want to lead by example. We are extremely excited to partner with West to once again prioritize sustainable practices to ensure we are being the best community partners we can be.”

West strives to be stewards of a sustainable future by factoring environmental considerations into every aspect of its business by targeting reductions in areas including CO2 emissions, waste, and energy and water use. West also strives to recycle and find beneficial reuse for waste and scrap. At this year’s 2023 Gritty 5K, West will also present the “Get Gritt-ified with West” station during FanFest prior to the start of the race. At this station, fans will be invited to Gritt-ify themselves with environmentally safe orange accessories to stand out among their fellow Gritizens.

The 2022 race was the fourth annual edition of the fun run/walk and saw its largest participation numbers with over 3,000 runners participating both in person in South Philadelphia and virtually.
