MALVERN, PA — HMP Global, in partnership with the Occupational Radiation Safety in Interventional Fluoroscopy (ORSIF), is set to host the Global Symposium on Interventional Radiation Protection (SIRP) on September 26-27, 2025. The symposium, the first of its kind, will focus exclusively on radiation safety for interventional lab teams, who perform over 10 million procedures annually and face the highest levels of radiation exposure in the medical field.
Interventionalists and support staff frequently encounter radiation during patient care, leading to increased reports of health issues such as brain tumors, skin lesions, and cataracts. To combat these risks, SIRP will explore innovative strategies to minimize radiation exposure.
“Protecting lab-based physicians and staff from procedural radiation exposure is essential to the future of the affected specialties,” noted Josh Hartman, Senior Vice President of Cardiovascular at HMP Education. “This symposium will foster a culture of safety and excellence in patient care.”
The event promises a comprehensive educational program aimed at interventional cardiologists, radiologists, vascular surgeons, and other lab staff. Participants will have access to continuing medical education credits and insights from radiation and health physicists.
Bob Foster, MD, President of ORSIF, emphasized the urgency of addressing radiation risks as medical cases become more complex. “New technologies are now available to mitigate these risks, allowing team members to have long and healthy careers,” he said.
Colleen Waters, Associate Vice President of Cardiovascular at HMP Education, highlighted the long-term benefits of focusing on radiation safety. “Prioritizing protection empowers clinicians to perform their best, ultimately improving outcomes for patients,” she stated.
John Cadwalader, Vice President of ORSIF, underscored the need for action. “For too many years we have not adequately addressed radiation protection for interventional physicians and staff members. It is time to start now,” he urged.
The SIRP symposium is a critical step in ensuring the health and safety of interventional lab teams, paving the way for improved patient care and professional longevity.
