WEST CHESTER, PA — The YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) has announced the appointment of Mary Curcio as Vice President of Philanthropy. Curcio, a seasoned professional with deep ties to the YMCA, will spearhead the organization’s fundraising and philanthropic initiatives.

The Brookhaven, PA native, who now resides in Glen Mills, began her career as a group exercise instructor, teaching classes such as BODYCOMBAT, TRX, and Yoga. This early experience gave her unique insights into the YMCA’s mission, fostering a lifelong passion for philanthropy.

Before her appointment, Curcio served as the Associate Vice President of Development at the YMCA of Central New York, where she managed the organization’s annual campaign and major gifts. She also brings a wealth of local experience, having held various positions at the Greater Philadelphia YMCA, including the role of Regional Development Director.

“I had the unique opportunity to meet the members who were positively impacted by our income-based memberships and to engage people who helped to fund them,” says Curcio. “It was then that I developed a passion for philanthropy.”

As Vice President of Philanthropy, Curcio will focus on expanding the YMCA’s philanthropic base, cultivating relationships with individuals, companies, and funding agencies. Her efforts will support the YGBW’s mission to serve all in the community, regardless of financial means. The organization’s income-based membership and financial assistance programs, which help ensure access to quality, affordable programs, are funded entirely by donors.

In 2023, YGBW awarded more than $2.2 million through these programs, a 6% increase over the previous year. These donations have allowed the YMCA to reach more than 12% of Chester County through membership and provide childcare services for over 4,500 families annually.

The need for these services is projected to grow in 2024, making Curcio’s role more crucial than ever. Her appointment comes at a pivotal time for the YMCA as it continues to expand its reach and impact in Chester County.

Curcio brings not just professional expertise but also a personal commitment to the YMCA’s mission. “Philanthropy is the backbone of a strong community,” she says. “When I see someone in need, I can help them out – and when I have a need, I am certain that someone will lend me a hand. It’s a beautiful cycle of kindness that I am humbled to be a part of.”
