Bentley Systems Appoints First Non-Family CEO, Nicholas Cumins

Bentley Systems, Incorporated

EXTON, PA — Nicholas Cumins has taken the helm as CEO of Bentley Systems, Incorporated (Nasdaq: BSY) as of July 1, 2024. He succeeds Greg Bentley, who now serves as Executive Chair of the Board of Directors.

Cumins marks a significant milestone as the first CEO outside the Bentley family in the company’s 40-year history. The Bentley brothers transformed computer-aided design (CAD) software with their development of MicroStation and propelled Bentley Systems to its current status as a leader in infrastructure engineering software. The company’s digital twin solutions are integral to designing, building, and operating critical infrastructure globally.

Cumins’ ascension comes at a pivotal time for the sector. With not enough engineers to meet global sustainability targets and adapt aging infrastructure to climate change, his leadership is crucial.

“Infrastructure is at a watershed moment,” said Cumins. “Despite massive post-pandemic investments in infrastructure projects and jobs, much remains to be done to make infrastructure more resilient. AI-powered digital twin solutions are unlocking the value of data across the infrastructure lifecycle.”

Bentley’s AI solutions are revolutionizing monitoring systems for roads, bridges, dams, water networks, and telecommunications towers, enhancing asset performance and resilience.

Before becoming CEO, Cumins served as Bentley Systems’ COO from January 2022. He joined the company in September 2020 as Chief Product Officer before its IPO. Cumins’ extensive experience includes senior roles at SAP, Scytl, and OpenX. He holds dual French and U.S. citizenship and is based in France.
