In an economy increasingly driven by digital landscapes, finding a lucrative foothold can yield impressive dividends. SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, has emerged as such a field, where the demand for skilled practitioners is on a steady rise. A recent Ahrefs study sheds light on which U.S. states offer the most rewarding financial prospects for SEO professionals. Here’s the scoop: New Mexico takes the crown.

Dubbed as the Land of Enchantment, New Mexico secures the top spot with its SEO workforce enjoying a yearly disposable income of $40,158. With a median SEO salary pegged at $74,792.68, a substantial leap of 37% from its average state remuneration of $54,400, it’s clear why the state leads the pack.

Not far behind is Texas. Stepping up to a commendable second place, Lone Star state SEO professionals pocket $76,963.41 annually, marking a 34% augmentation over the standard state wage of $57,300. Their annual disposable income clocks in at an imposing $39,345.

Third in line is Nevada, providing its SEO employees an annual disposable income of $39,235. With an average SEO salary of $76,292.68, it mirrors New Mexico with a 37% rise over the typical state pay of $55,490.

Beyond the front runners, Maryland claims fourth place, boasting the country’s sixth-highest SEO salary of $81,585.37. Deducting a monthly living expense of $3,628 brings the SEO workforce’s yearly disposable income to a respectable $38,046.

Arkansas, despite having one of the lowest average SEO salaries in the U.S. at $70,048.78, clinches fifth place, thanks to a disposable income of $37,963. A calculated increase of 44% from its average state salary of $48,570, the third-highest upsurge nationally, gives Arkansas an edge.

SEO workers in Iowa and North Carolina wrap up the top ten list, enjoying disposable incomes of $37,256 and $37,198 respectively.

Tim Soulo, CMO at Ahrefs, highlights the rising demand for SEO professionals as businesses ramp up their online presence. “The demand for SEO workers is continuing to grow as many businesses are expanding their online presence,” says Soulo.

“While the SEO salary is significantly higher than the mean salary in every state, it’s interesting to discover which states in particular can thrive in this industry,” he continues. “Many people may be unaware that a degree is not required to work in SEO – so these findings will hopefully encourage Americans to grasp the opportunity and dive into one of the world’s most exciting industries.”

This study, compiled by Ahrefs leveraging salary estimates from Glassdoor, provides a compelling snapshot into the lucrative SEO job market across the nation, offering valuable insights for anyone seeking to dive into one of the world’s most exciting industries.
