WEST BRANDYWINE, PA — Freedom Village at Brandywine recently honored one of its most esteemed residents, Blanche McKee, as she celebrated her 100th birthday on Halloween. This significant milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on Blanche’s extraordinary life, from her roots on an Iowa farm to her impactful career in nursing, and her cherished role in the Freedom Village community.
Blanche McKee’s life began in the heartland of America, on an Iowa farm, where she was born into a family with resilient roots. Her grandfather, an immigrant from Holland, instilled a strong sense of heritage and perseverance. Growing up amidst the challenges of the Great Depression and a severe drought, Blanche found solace and joy in the simple pleasures of farm life, which included attending the Great Iowa State Fair—a tradition she held dear.
Her early experiences in a medical practice ignited a passion for healthcare, leading her to pursue nursing at the University of Iowa. Blanche became a Registered Nurse and served as a cadet nurse in two army hospitals, a role that highlighted her dedication during tumultuous times. Her career further blossomed in Philadelphia at Graduate Hospital, where she specialized in operating room techniques. It was there that she honed her skills over five years in the OR.
Blanche’s personal life was equally fulfilling. She met her husband, William McKee, at the historic Arch Street Presbyterian Church. Together, they raised three daughters—Beth, Mary, and Linda—building a family legacy that now includes five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Her journey eventually brought Blanche and William to Freedom Village at Brandywine, where they became one of the first residents, moving in just two weeks after its inauguration over 25 years ago. After William’s passing, Blanche continued to thrive in her cozy condo, with her cat Susie as her companion. Her time at Freedom Village was enriched by the companionship of Kermit Goode, with whom she shared cherished summers in Maine, creating lasting memories until his passing.
“Blanche is a vibrant member of the Freedom Village family,” remarked Danielle Geyer, Executive Director of Freedom Village. “Her resilience, warmth, and the memories she has shared with family and friends are celebrated not only on her 100th birthday but every day.”
As Blanche McKee marks a century, her life story stands as a testament to resilience, dedication, and the enduring power of community and family. Her journey from Iowa’s cornfields to a fulfilling life at Freedom Village is celebrated by all who know her, reflecting a legacy of love and perseverance that continues to inspire.
