PHILADELPHIA, PA — This summer, millions of Americans will embark on road trips to state and national parks, many driving electric vehicles for the first time. An interactive map by PennEnvironment Research and Policy Center, Environment America Research and Policy Center, U.S. PIRG Education Fund, and Frontier Group aims to assist these drivers in finding parks with EV charging stations.
“Park systems across the country and Commonwealth are making it easier for EV owners to ‘recharge where you recharge,'” said PennEnvironment’s Deputy Director, Flora Cardoni. This initiative means visitors can avoid air pollution while enjoying the great outdoors. The map features over 260 parks with EV chargers and highlights the progress states have made in installing chargers.
In Pennsylvania, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) has installed chargers at around three dozen state parks and forests. This effort is crucial as transportation is the leading source of climate pollution in the U.S., and transitioning to electric vehicles can significantly reduce this impact.
“The premise of the National Park system was to preserve everything from purple mountains’ majesty to fruited plains. Climate change is threatening that,” said Cardoni. Glacier National Park, for example, has lost most of its glaciers since 1850, and they may completely disappear by 2030. Using EVs to visit these parks helps preserve them for future generations.
Charging infrastructure is rapidly expanding. At the end of 2023, nearly 20% of EV charging ports had been installed in the previous year. This growth is supported by private and public investments, including those from the Inflation Reduction Act.
“Going for a walk in the woods is a great way to let go of the anxieties of daily life,” Cardoni added. With more charging stations available, EV drivers can also leave behind their range anxiety. This summer, the new map will make planning eco-friendly road trips easier for everyone.
