KENNETT SQUARE, PA — Longwood Gardens has been recognized as the premier Memorial Day destination in Pennsylvania, securing the 20th spot overall in a recent survey conducted by MaxTour. The survey asked 3,000 families across the U.S. to name their preferred locations for spending Memorial Day if travel distance was not an issue.

Longwood Gardens, located in Kennett Square, stands out with its expansive gardens, stunning plant collections, and captivating fountains. The site’s family-friendly events make it a delightful spot for Memorial Day festivities. While there is an admission fee, several days throughout the year offer free entry, making the gardens accessible to all.

Pennsylvania boasts three other destinations in the top Memorial Day spots. Gettysburg National Military Park ranks at #48. It provides a profound historical experience with its special ceremonies, parades, and re-enactments commemorating one of the Civil War’s pivotal battles. Visitors can explore the museum and visitor center, which offers detailed exhibits about the battle’s significance.

Philadelphia’s Schuylkill River Trail is listed at #97. This multi-use trail runs alongside the Schuylkill River, offering picturesque views, parks, art installations, and areas for picnicking. It presents a full day of activity and relaxation for families of all ages.

Coming in at #117, Presque Isle State Park in Erie features sandy beaches, trails, and picnic areas. Families can swim, bird watch, or explore the natural landscapes. The park’s flat terrain ensures accessibility for strollers and wheelchairs, making it an inclusive destination for all visitors.

Memorial Day serves as a time for families to honor the sacrifices of military personnel. Matthew Meier of MaxTour reflects on the importance of these destinations: “Our survey highlights some of the most cherished locations where families can create lasting memories while paying tribute to our heroes. Whether it’s enjoying a scenic hike, a day at the beach, or participating in a solemn ceremony, these places offer something meaningful for everyone.”

Ranking first overall in the survey is First Landing State Park in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The park offers expansive trails and pristine beachfront. Following closely, Cape Cod National Seashore in Massachusetts, St. Simons Island Beaches in Georgia, Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, and Clearwater Beach in Florida round out the top five destinations.

These findings highlight the diverse ways families choose to commemorate Memorial Day, from engaging in outdoor activities to partaking in reflective ceremonies. As the survey shows, Pennsylvania’s rich blend of historical and natural sites continues to attract families looking to honor the holiday meaningfully.
