Dry, chapped lips are a common problem during the winter months. The cold weather and harsh winds can quickly strip away the natural oils from your lips, leaving them feeling dry and cracked. If left untreated, chapped lips can become painful and infected. In this article, we will discuss tips from dermatologists on how to prevent and treat dry, chapped lips at home.

How to Heal Dry, Chapped Lips

No one likes having dry, chapped lips. When it happens, it can be both uncomfortable and embarrassing. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to manage the problem and help your lips heal, as recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology Association. Let’s take a closer look at seven tips for lip care that can help you get your lips back in shape.

1. Non-Irritating Lip Products: The best way to avoid dry, cracked lips is to use non-irritating lip products like balm or lipstick. Look for products that contain ingredients like beeswax or shea butter which nourish and protect your lips from environmental factors like wind or sun exposure. Avoid products with fragrances or dyes as these may irritate your skin further.

2. Moisturize Regularly: Apply a non-irritating lip moisturizer several times a day and before bed to help keep your lips hydrated and protected from the elements. Make sure to purchase a moisturizer specifically designed for use on the delicate skin of the lips — regular facial moisturizers don’t work nearly as well!

3. Sun Protection: The sun is one of the worst offenders when it comes to causing dry, chapped lips so make sure you apply a non-irritating lip balm with SPF 30 or higher before going outdoors. This will help protect against sunburns and other damage caused by UV rays.

4. Drink Plenty of Water: Staying hydrated is important for overall health — including keeping your lips healthy! Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water throughout the day to keep them moist and supple.

5. No Licking/Biting/Picking: Your saliva does not contain any natural oils that will help nourish or protect your skin so licking, biting, or picking at your lips will only make matters worse! Try using a straw when drinking instead of directly from the cup if you find yourself wanting to lick them often.

6. Avoid Metal Items: There are certain materials that may lead to further discomfort on dry and chapped lips. Metal objects such as paperclips and jewelry are among them. In some instances they may even lead to inflammation, giving someone more of an uncomfortable sensation in their mouth region.

7. Humidify Your Home: A humidifier in your home will ensure that adequate moisture is present in the air which helps keep skin hydrated – including those on your lips! Having one running in any room where you spend most of your time can be especially helpful during winter months when indoor air tends to be drier than usual.

Keeping dry, chapped lips at bay doesn’t have to be an uphill battle; following these seven tips for lip care should help improve their condition quickly and easily! However, if after two weeks there has been no improvement then it might be time to see a board-certified dermatologist who can advise on more intensive treatments such as topical creams or laser treatments depending upon what kind of issue you are experiencing with your lips. Remember – prevention is always better than cure when it comes to maintaining healthy skin!
