HARRISBURG, PA — The National Frozen & Refrigerated Food Association (NFRA) has released new survey data just in time for National Ice Cream Month. The findings highlight America’s enduring love for ice cream, showing a blend of traditional preferences and modern trends.

A Classic Favorite

The survey indicates that 71% of adults prefer ice cream made with simple, natural ingredients. This preference cuts across various age groups. Nostalgia also plays a key role, with 68% of adults feeling nostalgic upon hearing the jingle of an ice cream truck, often leading to a grocery store visit to satisfy their cravings.

Consumer Choices

Ice cream remains a summer essential, with 72% of respondents agreeing that no summer meal is complete without it. The convenience and affordability of grocery store ice cream resonate strongly, as most consumers prefer to enjoy their treat at home. Environmental consciousness is on the rise, with 56% willing to pay more for ice cream in eco-friendly packaging. Notably, younger generations, such as Gen Z and millennials, show a higher willingness to spend extra on sustainable packaging compared to older generations like Gen X and baby boomers.

Flavor Preferences

While classic flavors like chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry still dominate, 70% of adults also enjoy trying new and unconventional flavors. This adventurous spirit is particularly strong among younger consumers, with a significant percentage of Gen Z, millennials, and Gen X expressing a love for experimenting with new tastes.

Regional and Brand Loyalty

Regional differences in brand loyalty are evident, with stronger allegiance in the Southern and Northeastern regions compared to the Midwest and West. Additionally, 78% of adults are willing to pay more for premium ice cream made with high-quality ingredients. This highlights a lucrative opportunity for brands focusing on quality and unique offerings.
