ELVERSON, PA — History enthusiasts are invited to delve into the past at Hopewell Furnace on September 28, as the site commemorates the impactful legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) with a day of immersive activities. From 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., visitors can partake in a range of free programs designed to honor the CCC’s contributions during the Great Depression.

The day’s highlights include a guided hike at 11:00 a.m., allowing participants to explore key locations where the CCC made its mark on Hopewell Furnace. Reenactors dressed in period attire will conduct demonstrations throughout the day, showcasing the CCC’s pivotal role in restoring the historic iron-making community. Activities such as mock enlistment procedures, woodcutting, and cooking will provide an authentic glimpse into the CCC’s work and daily life.

Established as a National Historic Site in 1938, Hopewell Furnace offers a preserved snapshot of 18th and 19th-century iron production, complete with a charcoal-fueled furnace and rich cultural resources. The CCC’s restoration efforts in the late 1930s paved the way for public engagement with this historical treasure.

Concluding the day’s events, the Ringgold Band will perform in the park’s upper parking lot from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., bringing the sounds of the 1930s to life against the backdrop of the historic site. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and enjoy the musical journey.

Hopewell Furnace, located at 2 Mark Bird Lane, offers a unique opportunity for visitors to connect with America’s past. The park is open Wednesday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with free admission. For more details, call or visit the park’s event page.
