PHILADELPHIA, PA — In a melodious tribute to Philadelphia’s vibrant music community, WXPN-FM 88.5 is set to release “WXPN Homegrown Originals Volume 2,” a curated 12-inch vinyl LP featuring exclusive performances by ten of the area’s most promising artists. This limited-edition treasure will be available solely as a gift with purchase at eleven select independent record stores on Record Store Day, Saturday, April 20, 2024.
Following the overwhelming success of its inaugural Homegrown Originals LP last year, WXPN, Philadelphia’s public radio station, is amplifying its support for local talent and record shops with an even bigger and more diverse collection this year. “The positive response from last year’s release was truly heartwarming, enabling us to expand our project to feature more artists, press more copies, and partner with more stores,” shared John Vettese, WXPN Local program host and the mind behind the album’s liner notes.
“Homegrown Originals Volume 2” spans a wide array of genres, from soul-stirring R&B to heartfelt folk, gritty rock, and catchy pop, offering listeners a unique glimpse into Southeastern PA’s eclectic music scene over the past year. The album boasts ten original songs recorded and produced by WXPN staff throughout 2023, capturing the essence of Philadelphia’s musical talent.
Side A kicks off with the energetic “Are You Gonna Run?” by Low Cut Connie, followed by tracks from Gladie, Greg Mendez, Julia Pratt, and Hurry. Side B continues the auditory journey with Slaughter Beach, Dog, Karlia, Speedy Ortiz, Caring Less, and Moustapha Noumbissi, each adding their distinct flavor to this rich musical compilation.
Record Store Day, celebrated every April, shines a spotlight on the crucial role record stores play in their communities by offering exclusive releases and special promotions. “WXPN Homegrown Originals Volume 2” will join the festivities, available as a complimentary item with any purchase at the participating stores, while supplies last.
Philadelphia-area music lovers can find this exclusive LP at Main Street Music, Repo Records, Hideaway Music, and other independent record stores across Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Each location promises a day filled with music discovery, celebrating the bond between local musicians, fans, and the record stores that bring them together.
Dogfish Head Craft Brewery joins the celebration as the promotional partner, adding an extra layer of excitement to the event.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 20, and prepare to immerse yourself in the sounds of Philadelphia with “WXPN Homegrown Originals Volume 2.” It’s a rare opportunity to own a piece of the local music scene and support the independent record stores that help make these moments possible.
