PHILADELPHIA, PA – Chris’ Jazz Café, at 1421 Sansom Street, will celebrate rising female jazz performers with a new series titled Women Instrumentalists in Jazz: The New Generation. The series will run from July 24 to July 27, featuring talented young women making waves in the jazz scene.

The series kicks off on Wednesday, July 24, with the Sarah Hanahan Quartet. Hanahan, a skilled saxophonist based in New York City, is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Jazz Performance at The Juilliard School. The following night, Thursday, July 25, West Philly-based vibraphonist Hudson River will take the stage. River started her journey in the Upper Darby High School drumline and has since become a notable street performer and venue artist in Philadelphia.

On Friday, July 26, the Hailey Brinnel Quintet, featuring special guest trumpeter Summer Camargo, will perform. Brinnel, a trombonist, vocalist, and educator from Philadelphia, was a finalist in the 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. She has also been featured on Spotify’s “Best Vocal Jazz of 2022” playlist and was named one of GRAMMY.com’s “10 Emerging Jazz Artists to Watch.”

The series concludes on Saturday, July 27, with the Laura Orzehoski Quintet. Orzehoski, currently studying Jazz Studies at Temple University under Terell Stafford, has performed at prestigious venues such as Dizzy’s Jazz Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center and Birdland in New York City.

This initiative is supported by Live Music Society’s Music in Action grant, aimed at highlighting emerging minority artists and women in music. Mark DeNinno, chef/owner of Chris’ Jazz Café, expressed his enthusiasm for the series, stating, “We plan to host several festivals and workshops focusing on women in the coming year. We hope this program will bring attention to female-focused events while fostering bonds between local female artists, where they can hone their craft while creating collaborations that lead to friendships, community support, mentorships, and networking in the jazz industry.”
