PHILADELPHIA, PA — Philadelphia’s creative spirits will soon converge on a new location for the city’s beloved Kensington Derby and Arts Fest! Relocating from the heart of East Kensington, the festival will light up Frankford Avenue on Saturday, May 11, 2024, from 12 pm to 6 pm.
An event that has previously been crowned “Best of Philly”, the Kensington Derby and Arts Fest is an explosion of creativity, fun, and community spirit. At the heart of the festival is the iconic parade. Teams will unleash their ingenuity by crafting human-powered sculptures from recycled bicycles and other materials. These creations will tackle a challenging course filled with obstacles before culminating in a thrilling mud-pit finish at the festival grounds.
But the festival is not just about the derby. Throughout the day, the streets will vibrate with music from local bands and DJs. Food lovers will savor the culinary delights offered by food trucks and the blossoming East Kensington dining scene. Meanwhile, artists, vendors, and community groups will add a dash of color and vibrancy, showcasing the diversity and talent within our city.
This neighborhood celebration, now in its 16th year, serves as a fundraiser for the East Kensington Neighbors Association, a testament to the event’s roots in fostering community development. In fact, proceeds from the beer sales at the celebration are channeled back into the East Kensington community through their mini-grant program.
East Kensington is a dynamic neighborhood that has witnessed tremendous growth, with Frankford Avenue seeing a wave of new business openings. According to Kae Anderson, the Director of Operations at Fishtown District, the festival is an opportunity to experience the unique creative spirit of East Kensington.
Over 15,000 people flock to the festival every year, not just to watch the parade or enjoy the food, but to celebrate the vibrant and growing neighborhoods of East Kensington and Fishtown. It’s an event that is as unique as the communities it brings together and is a beloved tradition, rain or shine.
The parade is free to participate in, with competitors just needing a bike, helmet, and a clever team name to join the fun. For the audience, the Kensington Derby and Arts Fest is free to attend, with food and drink available on a pay-as-you-go basis.
The festival will be home to over 100 local merchants, artists, and makers. It’s a retail paradise with everything from handmade jewelry and ceramics to vintage goods and unique clothing. Music will play all day, with a program featuring local bands and DJs. More information about the festival, with registration for art vendors and derby teams, can be found at www.kensingtonkineticarts.org.
