PHILADELPHIA, PA — Opening on July 1, 1874, the Philadelphia Zoo celebrated its inaugural day by welcoming over 3,000 guests. With the opening of its gates, it was marked as “America’s First Zoo”. The Zoological Society of Philadelphia, chartered in 1859, had to wait 15 years due to the Civil War to officially open the remarkable institution.
Over the years, the zoo has welcomed almost 100 million guests, earning the Zoo a distinct place in family traditions and in the hearts of animal enthusiasts. To commemorate 150 years of zoo excellence, a host of festivities, ticket offers, membership deals, and additional surprises are planned for their loyal patrons.
The Zoo also celebrates its golden jubilee, marking 50 successful years of accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. This accreditation reflects the Zoo’s unwavering commitment to high standards in animal care and welfare.
The celebration kicks off with a flash ticket sale on Sunday, June 9. For a nod to the Zoo’s opening year, all General Admission Adult and Children’s tickets will be priced at $18.74. The sale tickets can be used any day from Monday, June 10 through Labor Day weekend (Monday, September 2).
There is also a special membership deal available for $150. The deal includes day-time admission for a year, complimentary parking, access to exclusive events, dining and retail discounts, and much more. This membership directly supports the Zoo’s cause.
From Friday, June 28 through Sunday, June 30, The Zoo invites guests to a 150th-anniversary extravaganza. The first 150 guests on each of those days will receive a commemorative “150 Years of Philly Zoo” pin.
On Monday, July 1, the Zoo celebrates its 150th grand opening anniversary with a brass band, $1.50 hot dogs, special animal activities, and a series of commemorative events. It’s going to be a day of grandeur reminiscent of the opening day back in 1874.
From 1:00 – 5:00pm on Monday, July 1, Wawa Welcome America will be hosting a Philadelphia Zoo 150th Anniversary Celebration outside the Zoo where guests can enjoy complimentary food samples, performances, face painting, and more. Complimentary admission to the Philadelphia Zoo will also be available from 3:00pm-5:00pm, on a first come first served basis.
The Zoo’s 150 years of existence is a testament to its long-standing commitment to animal care and welfare, exemplifying what it truly means to be “America’s First Zoo”.
