MALVERN, PA — Coming this May, a divine zephyr of hilarity descends upon the idyllic town of Malvern, PA. Renowned theatre People’s Light presents the regional premiere of Obie Award-winning play, “Hurricane Diane”. The brilliant and bumptious play penned by Pulitzer Prize finalist Madeleine George will captivate audiences from May 1 to 19, boasting 21 deft performances on the historic Leonard C. Haas Stage.
“Hurricane Diane” is no mere tempest in a teapot. It’s a whirlwind of comedy with mythological overtones and a powerful message about climate change. Picture this: the Greek god Dionysus disguised as Diane, a permaculture gardener blessed with swaggering charm and a divine mission. Her task? To recruit mortals for an environmental revolution, an effort to restore Earth to its natural glory.
The witty narrative is set in an unsuspecting New Jersey suburb where Diane stirs up a storm among a group of housewives who, unbeknownst to them, crave a bacchanalian catharsis. George’s comedy is a delightful concoction of ancient mythology, a battle against climate change, and a sprinkle of “Real Housewives of New Jersey” shenanigans.
And who’s steering this tempest? No one other than the People’s Light Associate Producing Director, Molly Rosa Houlahan. A Malvern native, Houlahan is making her directorial debut at the theatre, reuniting with her childhood community in the most delightful way.
“At first glance at ‘Hurricane Diane’, I found my childhood friends and neighbors on the pages—fierce, funny, smart women who stubbornly crafted their world,” said Houlahan. “This play is my joyful challenge to us, the community, to face our worst habits head-on and maybe, just maybe, revel in the wild, wicked catharsis that awaits.”
Bringing Diane to life is actor and comedian Rami Margron, reprising the role after triumphant performances in San Diego and Boston. Playing Jersey housewives, Teri Lamm and Julianna Zinkel, members of People’s Light Company Artist, will also grace the stage, accompanied by familiar faces Suli Holum and Shauna Miles.
The House of People’s Light invites you to this divine comedy, striking a perfect balance between the theatrical spectacle and an intimate exploration of our contemporary struggles. “Madeleine George’s play is truly a thrilling adventure, one that marries large-than-life theatricality with heart-touching stories from our complicated lives,” said Zak Berkman, Producing Artistic Director at People’s Light.
No matter the weather outside, “Hurricane Diane” promises a storm of laughter and thought-provoking dialogue at People’s Light. Grab your tickets now, starting from $42.
