WEST CHESTER, PA — In a magical blend of classic fairy tale and enchanting opera, West Chester University’s Opera Theatre is inviting audiences to experience their rendition of ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ This timeless tale will come alive on Friday, November 17, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, November 18, at 3 p.m. The performances will take place in the Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall, situated within the Philips Memorial Building, located at 700 S. High Street, West Chester.
The opera, set to the lush, romantic music of Vittorio Giannini, promises an unforgettable journey through one of the world’s most beloved stories. According to Assistant Professor and Director of Opera Nicholas Provenzale, “This is the perfect introduction to opera for every age.” The story follows the familiar and popular classic fairytale, with beautiful, accessible music performed in English, and a runtime of just under an hour.
The production has already graced stages at the Free Library of Philadelphia and the Kennett Library, captivating audiences and introducing new fans to the world of opera. The cast has also performed for Boys and Girls Clubs in the Philadelphia region, continuing West Chester University’s commitment to community engagement and outreach.
With a cast of 11 and the accompaniment of an onstage pianist, this production showcases the talent and craftsmanship of West Chester University’s Wells School of Music students. Vocal Performance major Zoe Bennett from Malvern, PA, and Flute major Elizabeth Jones from Willow Grove, PA, will alternate in the title role of ‘Beauty.’
Advance ticket purchases are encouraged, with general admission tickets available for $7. Admission for faculty, staff, students, and children under 12 is free. Parking options include areas around the Philips Memorial Building and West Chester’s M Lot.
The Wells School of Music, accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, is renowned for its programs in Music Performance, Education, Theory, History, Composition, and Music Therapy.
