EXTON, PAUniversal Technical Institute (UTI) in Exton is bringing back its popular Summer Ignite program for 2024. This initiative, in partnership with NAPA, aims to address the growing need for skilled automotive service technicians and mechanics.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 67,700 job openings annually for automotive service technicians and mechanics through 2032. Recognizing this demand, UTI’s Summer Ignite program offers high school juniors a chance to explore careers in automotive or motorcycle repair without any cost.

Launched in 2018, the three-week introductory course provides hands-on training and an overview of these career fields. Students who pass the end-of-course exam can earn credits toward their future education at UTI, potentially reducing tuition costs.

In 2023, nearly 50 percent of Summer Ignite participants chose to pursue careers in automotive or motorcycle repair after high school, enrolling in UTI programs.

“As the demand for skilled technicians remains strong, and Gen Z considers educational paths outside of a traditional four-year degree, Summer Ignite offers valuable hands-on training,” said Tracy Lorenz, President of UTI Division. “This program highlights our commitment to cultivating talented technicians for the ever-evolving industry.”

UTI and NAPA have partnered since 2021 to support aspiring technicians. As part of the program, NAPA provides each student with three free uniform shirts.

“Today’s job market is uncertain, but the demand for automotive technicians is clear,” said Randy Breaux, North America Group President of Genuine Parts Company. “Our continued work with UTI helps meet this demand and supports young people as they consider this career path.”

Applications for the Summer Ignite program are now open. The Exton campus will hold its session starting July 15, 2024. This program not only offers practical experience but also inspires students to take control of their career paths in a meaningful way.
