PHILADELPHIA, PA — Two Chester County natives, Evelyn Lara and Meredith Kearney, are set to graduate from Temple University, with a strong future ahead for both.
From First-Gen to Twice Temple Made: A Remarkable Journey
Evelyn Lara, from West Grove, is on track to earn not just one, but two degrees from Temple. Lara will graduate with a bachelor’s in adult and organizational development, while simultaneously enrolled in an accelerated master’s dual-degree program in advocacy and organizational development.
Lara, a first-generation student, started her higher education journey at Delaware County Community College. After earning an associate’s degree, she transferred to Temple University, aware that she needed more than an associate’s degree to fulfill her dreams.
At Temple, Lara developed a deeper understanding of her career path – not merely an educator but a change-maker for organizations and communities. Working closely with Assistant Professor Meghan Raisch, Lara found a mentor who recognized her potential and encouraged her to push her boundaries.
Lara also turned her eyes toward the future, her ambition stretching as far as earning a PhD and becoming a professor to inspire and advocate for students like her. “I don’t see many Latinx individuals pursuing higher education because we know the challenges, but working hard, having a vision and not letting go of that vision will get you there. I am thankful to Temple for seeing my potential.”
Passion-Driven Temple Peer Educator Inspires Through Health Education
In contrast, Downingtown’s Meredith Kearney has been engaging folks in discussions about topics that some might find uncomfortable. As a peer educator at the Wellness Resource Center, Kearney guides conversations about health and well-being.
At Temple, she found her calling in health education. Having initially enrolled as an undecided student, Kearney sampled a variety of courses before discovering her passion for public health.
In addition to her studies, Kearney spent some time interning at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Early Head Start program. Her health education skills learned at Temple made a direct impact at CHOP and the community it serves. She also bagged Temple’s Diamond Award, an undergraduate accolade of the highest order.
Upon graduation, Kearney has her sights set on furthering her education and continuing her work in health education. She wants to manage projects for nonprofit organizations and is grateful for the community and experiences Temple offered her.
