WEST CHESTER, PA — Demonstrating exceptional skill and commitment to student safety, bus drivers from the West Chester Area School District (WCASD) emerged victorious at the 43rd Annual School Bus Safety Competition. The event, held at Downingtown Area School District’s Marsh Creek Sixth Grade Center, saw over 100 contestants from various districts across Chester County vying for top honors.
The competition, a rigorous test of driving and safety knowledge, included a written examination and 10 practical driving events designed to challenge the drivers’ maneuvering skills with a school bus. Representing WCASD were teams from Krapf and On the Go Kids, showcasing their dedication and expertise in the field of student transportation.
The West Chester team took first place, marking a significant achievement for the district. Notably, four WCASD drivers ranked among the top five overall performers, with Joanne Cowan clinching the first place, Patti Carey securing second, Elise Groff landing in fourth, and Cheryl Vogelsang taking fifth place. This accomplishment qualifies them for the state-level competition to be held at Penn State University this June.
Michele Porco, WCASD’s Manager of Transportation, expressed immense pride in the team’s performance. “The 43rd annual School Bus Safety Competition highlighted the extraordinary skills and unwavering commitment of our drivers to ensure the safety of our students,” Porco stated. “This success is a testament to our continuous efforts towards excellence in training and adherence to the highest safety standards.”
The community celebrates this achievement, which highlights the WCASD’s dedication to providing safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services for its students and families.
